CRO MAGS, 9/27/2008, BROOKLYN

John Bloodclot of the CRO-MAGS invited me to their benefit gig at STUDIO B here in Brooklyn the other day. I don't go out that much lately, especially not to concerts, but this was insane, reminded me of the 'good old days'. It was a great lineup, SICK OF IT ALL were the headliners, but I didn't wait for them, I just saw the CRO-MAGS + MURPHY'S LAW who played before them. When John hit the stage, the place exploded, it was the best hardcore gig I've ever witnessed.

In the middle of the concert, John stopped the music - pulled me to the center of the stage and said "THIS IS BOOGIE, HE IS BLAH BLAH BLAH ... AND TODAY IS HIS DAUGHTER'S FIRST BIRTHDAY. NOW ON 3 ALL OF YOU SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY"
ONE, TWO, THREE - HAPPY BIRTHDAY
(Maya's birthday was actually on the 26th, but we threw a party on the 27th.)

thanks bro, you made my day!

John's new band BLOODCLOT is kicking ass, you should check out their new album BURN BABYLON BURN ... also, buy his legendary book, THE EVOLUTION OF A CRO-MAGNON , you won't be disappointed.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE

HA! I stopped by my friend Kimou's office yesterday, he is the creative director of ZOO YORK - hooked me up with loads of shit ... I was supposed to do a tee with Zoo, with my ULTIMATE PIGEON shot (I shoot pigeons all the time, but this is still the best one), they made ONE sample, and then decided to go with a different image. So yep, this is the only ultimate pigeon tee in existence ! And it's mine, of course ...

frenchKISS by ANDERS PETERSEN

Just got it from AMAZON a couple of days ago ... and all I can say is WHOOOOOOOOOOOA!!!! Amazing book, in my opinion the best Petersen's book so far. And one of the best photo books I've come across lately. Gritty contrasty kickass images, tight edit; the book is flawless ... if you compare it with CAFE LEHMITZ (1978), the evolution of Anders Petersen as a photographer is clear. CAFE LEHMITZ is a great FIRST book, it has all elements that a first book needs (shocking in a way, great access, definitelly catches people's attention - it really put him on the map) - but FRENCHKISS is in my opinion much deeper and more mature. So order it now, his books are very sought after and sell out fast.

ISTANBUL PROOFS

My ISTANBUL book (Upper Playground, 2008) final proofs arrived and are approved, we're ready to go ... I expect advance copies in less than a month. I had an amazing time in Istanbul, and I think it shows in the book. This book will for sure be better than SAO PAULO, but BELGRADE BELONGS TO ME that's coming out in December blows them both away, it's gonna be killer.

good quotes

"If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough." Mario Andretti, one of the greatest race car drivers of all times.

"A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be. " Wayne Gretzki, the greatest hockey player of all times.

TAKUNO

Published by Sokyu-Sha in 2005, beautifully done book. This book doesn't have any one KILLER image, but it works as a whole, it's really an art piece.
There are basically two completely different approaches when you're making a photo book. One is to focus on single images, and the book is a collection of strong singles, where you say WHOA after every page. The other is to focus more on the flow, where you realize at the end what the great experience the whole book was. Daido's books are mostly the latter.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MAN in 15 frames.

Javier Bardem's role of psychotic killer Anton Chigurh in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MAN simply blew me away ... so yep, I rented the DVD again and took some pictures.
