SHELLAC shoot etc

SHELLAC FALL/WINTER 2008/2009 SEASON SHOOT, TOKYO, JAPAN.
I think we are finally done shooting, initial contact sheets look great, it's time to have some fun now, check out the bookstores, do some shopping, eat some good food. I'm jet lagged as fuck, sleeping 3 hours per night average, spaced out all the time ... if you haven't been to Japan, watch LOST IN TRANSLATION, that's exactly how it feels. Never fully awake but never fully asleep either; if you go to bed at midnight, dead tired, you wake up at 3am, and no way you can sleep more. Jet lag is a bitch. That makes sleeping pills the greatest invention of all times.
Food is amazing here, I'm having a blast, just hope not to gain any more weight, cause Tuscany was a massacre, constant eating and drinking.

Here are some photos from past two days, by Hiromi Otsuka.

off to tokyo

I just got back two nights ago, after two weeks in Belgrade and a week in Italy, and tomorrow morning I'm off to Tokyo for a shoot.

My book on Belgrade is wrapped up, so there was no pressure to shoot - it was nice to just chill for a change; and eat and drink, and get fat... but of course, I snapped a couple of shots, as always.

Here are some shots from the first couple of rolls I processed today.

My wife and kid joined me in Belgrade and we went all together to Milan.
I love Europe, especially Italy ... completely different way of life. I like waking up, walking across the street and having the best espresso in the world (NOT FROM A PAPER CUP). People are more normal than in nyc, it's hard to explain, more friendly and laid back. We definitely want to move to Italy some day soon.

After two days in Milan, we drove to Tuscany for a wedding. It was great, Tuscany is surreal, amazing and perfect, too perfect for me to shoot - wherever you turn you see a perfect postcard shot. So I just emptied my brain, it was my first vacation from photography in a long time.

this is where we stayed

VINTAGE PRINTS!

Digging through some old old prints here in Belgrade, full boxes and plastic bags of them ... most of them are crap; they were all printed here in my house, before I left for the US in 1998, my pre scanner/computer period. I never had a computer, let alone scanner before leaving for the US ... I didn't have a darkroom, so I would put a blanket over the window and set up in my bedroom. I used some russian, romanian, bulgarian, hungarian photo paper - you couldn't get anything decent here back in the days, and even if you could it was way too expensive.

This was in 1996 I think, there was a huge fire in the trolley bus garage near my house. It was rumored that the fire was actually arson, the communists who were in power at the time were trying to get rid of some incriminating documents.
Unfortunately I had only one roll of film :)

Off to Italy tomorrow - 2 days in Milan then 4 days in Tuscany ... already got fat from my mom's cooking here in Belgrade, can't even imagine what's gonna happen in Tuscany

Aviation Museum in Belgrade

I was at the airport in Belgrade waiting to pick up my wife and kid who were coming in from New York, the plane was two hours late so my mom an I went to check the aviation museum nearby. The museum is great, one of the five best in Europe, but in my opinion the real treasures were outside ... a graveyard of abandoned planes and helicopters, all pretty apocalyptic.
